Stop the Gas Plant Threatening Our Communities
A large natural gas power plant is being proposed near Hwy 30 and Linn-Benton Road. It would be located just miles from several nearby communities:
Cities within distance:
- Under 3 miles: Atkins, Cedar Rapids, Fairfax
- 3–5 miles: Covington, Walford
- 5–10 miles: Hiawatha, Newhall, Norway, Palo, Shellsburg, Watkins
Per the State of Iowa, the site impact area covers 10 miles around the proposed plant, impacting a large portion of both Linn and Benton Counties.
The plant would bring increased air pollution, potential health risks for our families, lower property values, and slow the future growth of our communities—at a time when cleaner, greener energy options are available.
We're taking action but we need you.
Why This Matters
Air & Health
- Emits NOx, CO₂, and other particulate matter
- Linked to asthma and other respiratory issues
- Impacts nearby and downwind communities most
Property & Land
- Located on prime agricultural land
- Industrial proximity can impact home values
- Once developed, this land is gone permanently
Safety
- Risk of gas leaks and industrial incidents
- Residents deserve distance from industrial hazards
Quality of Life
- Continuous noise and bright nighttime lighting
- Permanent change to the rural character of the area
